Not only does the warm weather welcome the return of baseball, but it usually offers a chance for you to satisfy your musical thirst. This spring and summer will be a special one on that several pop-rock bands are scheduled to play in the area.
The duo who had the most hits in the late seventies and eighties, Hall and Oates, are touring for the first time in over a decade. When they hit Riverbend in Cincinnati on July 20, I will be heard singing along to "Rich Girl", "Maneater" and "She's Gone."
Several months before then, I will be among a smaller but enthusiastic crowd to see the Front Bottoms. The indie duo, who are currently touring their new album Back on Top, will be playing in Cincinnati at Bogarts on May 7.
Other artists on the schedule for 2016 tours are Mickey Dolenz and Peter Tork of the Monkees and the Piano Man himself Billy Joel. These guys have been enduring the hazards of life on the road for five decades now, but they continue to put on satisfying shows.
Joel even wrote a song about the life of a touring musician, "The Entertainer",which appeared very early in his career on his second album Streetlife Serenade. He regrets that touring leaves no opportunity to make friends, saying "I'd love to stay but there's bills to pay, and I just don't have the time."
Here are eight other songs that describe touring. Some artists go along with Joel and discuss the downside of touring, while others seem to embrace the idea.
"Turn the Page" by Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
Unknowingly on the brink of reaching multi platinum success with Night Moves, Seger here almost whisperingly bemoans life on the road.
"The Load Out" by Jackson Browne
This tune from Running on Empty provides the most detailed portrait of touring, even admitting that "We do so many shows in a row that these towns all look the same."
"Road Song" by Fountains of Wayne
The band tries to pass the time by writing a song for the loved ones back home, an engaging activity "between the stops at Cracker Barrel and forty movies with Will Farrell."
"On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson
The country legend embraces the musician's life, exclaiming "I just can't wait to get on the road again."
"We're an American Band" by Grand Funk
This hit single focuses on the parties that go along with the travel, especially the "Booze and ladies."
"Homeward Bound" by Simon and Garfunkel
Rich imagery helps make this acoustic gem one of the best road songs, where "each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories."
"Beth" by Kiss
The rock band's first pop ballad featured drummer Peter Criss on vocals, addressing his wife's regret that "Me and the boys will playing all night."
"From Rochdale to Ocho Rios" by 10cc
The music from this track on Bloody Tourists is upbeat, but the message is a lament that "you spend half your life in transit."
